Volunteer officials are the cornerstone of university sport, and training as an official is one of the very best ways you can continue to support the next generation of university taekwondo practitioners.
To develop the next generation of officials we run a number of courses each year for students and alumni looking to learn and develop their corner judging and refereeing skills, with free training courses available for current student of our member clubs.
We utilise a novel programme of home study, online theory tests, practical training courses, and supervised tournament training for the certification of officials, with all courses led by international referees. Separate courses are available in the latest rule-sets for both ITF rules sparring and WTF rules sparring, with certification available for Corner Judges (level 3) and Centre Referees (level 2). Please note that certified centre referees are paid an allowance when attending tournaments.
A key component of the charity’s mission is to facilitate the education of officials within clubs in support of their teams, inter-varsity programmes and beyond. (1) From March 2018 all volunteer corner judges will be required to pass the online theory test before they will be permitted to corner judges at BSTF tournaments, and (2) all teams entering 30 or more players in a single tournament that academic year will be required to send one team member to complete the charity’s free centre referee training programme. This does not increase total number of officials, as trainee referees are not in addition but replacing a corner judge from the team’s quota at subsequent events during their training.
Please see our events calendar for more information on the specific individual courses and links to learning resources, and please contact us if you have any queries.
Corner Judges (L3)
Separate courses are available for both WTF rules sparring and ITF rules sparring disciplines. Study materials and online tests for corner judges (L3) are completely free. All nominated volunteer corner judges at the charity’s events without a third party corner judging qualification and everyone looking to attend one of the one-day training courses are required to first complete this online training.
The one-day training courses are also completely free for current students of our member clubs! As places are limited, priority will be strictly given to students who commit in advance to volunteer at upcoming events in the annual tournament series.
Centre Referees (L2)
Separate courses are available for both WTF rules sparring and ITF rules sparring disciplines. Candidates for the centre referee (L2) course must first complete all parts of their corner judge (L3) certification before taking the centre referee’s online test and attending a one-day training course. This is not required for current holders of a suitable 3rd party corner judge certification or for BSTF corner judge volunteers who have previously corner judged at 3 or more tournaments, who may request to begin at the centre referee (L2) training and certification level.
A limited number of Centre Referee places are available on each training course. Please note that certified centre referees are paid an allowance when attending tournaments.
