Eligibility and Running Order

The Lion’s Cup event includes individual Chang-Hon patterns and Kukkiwon patterns tournaments, as well as WT rules and ITF rules sparring tournaments. The WT rules sparring tournament is a dual format tournament*. The ITF rules sparring tournament is a triple format tournament.**

The Lion’s Cup welcomes student athlete entries from university clubs in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Irish university student competitors are eligible to enter all patterns events, all AM sparring tournaments and Test Match (TM) tournament, but not the PM tournaments.

  1. Chang-Hon patterns tournament and Kukkiwon patterns tournament (early AM)
  2. ITF rules sparring tournament (AM) and WT rules sparring tournament (AM)
  3. ITF rules sparring test matches (TM)
  4. ITF rules sparring tournament (PM) and WT rules sparring tournament (PM)

*A dual tournament format means that two separate brackets are contested on the same day, one after the other. This allows players to travel to a single event but compete in two tournaments, guaranteeing all athletes at least two matches. The dual tournaments’ brackets have different weight boundaries (e.g., Olympic vs World Championship weights) to allow for a wider range of potential opponents.

**All athletes entered into the ITF rules sparring AM or PM tournaments will automatically be entered into the mid-session Test Matches at no extra cost. Unlike the AM or PM events the Test Match(s) are not part of an elimination bracket towards a final, but unique individual matches against other competitors in your division. Test Matches allow us to maximise the number of matches allowing athletes to gain as much additional competition experience as possible.

All athletes may enter any one patterns tournament. Athletes may also enter any one AM sparring tournament and any one PM sparring tournament. For example, an athlete may enter both ITF rules tournaments AM & PM, or may enter a WT rules tournament in the morning (AM) and an ITF rules tournament in the afternoon (PM).

Important Information

Patterns tournaments

All athletes may enter the Chang-Hon patterns and Kukkiwon patterns individual tournaments. In the Lion’s Cup tournament there are two rounds of two patterns each (note this is a slightly different format than the Nationals Final’s event). All athletes compete in their division’s first round – the qualification round – performing two patterns. Athlete’s scores are combined and the top 4 move on their division’s second round – the finals round –  each performing two additional patterns to determine the final medal placements.
